From the first positive test to the initial ultrasound
Worry, excitement, thrill are starting to abound
Motherhood, in all its glory, has started. It’s begun
Everyone loves a baby and talks about all the fun
Then the twitches and the wiggles, the flutters and the kicks,
Sprinkled in between the reflux, the headaches and other pregger tricks
The naming process, girl or boy, who will you be?
How lucky, so blessed I am to have you exclusively
Next, birth, in all its beauty and horror, great delight and shock
I thank you, God, for my doctor and his magic, epidural block
I see your face, I’m dazed from excite and wonder
Just then I realize, “You just popped out from my down under?!”
New bonds are forming; love is teeming from within our hearts
We count your toes and sing your name, we check out all your parts
Then they smile, “Time to go. We’ll help you to the car.”
A little panicked, taking home this baby who makes tar
The first night was pretty ruthless, it felt longer than a week
Managing spit-ups, diapers, crying and boobies that leak
We start to get the hang of things and all the challenges you bring
Always have a sippy on hand or something loud to ding
Soon you’re running, playing, dancing all around the floor
My heart and love along with patience, all of this I pour
Words are forming fast these days, you’re the smartest of them all
Screaming, “puppy, kitty, milk” and your most favorite, “Ball!”
Soon you’re independent, doing everything you can
I hope we raised you right, and you know I’m your biggest fan
You’re my child, a part of me, from beginning until end
Until my death, you’re always mine through the thickest and the thin
This parenting thing ain’t easy, it's taken all my wit
Until I figured out one, small fact; everyone is winging it!
